Another day in Paradise…

A very nice man at our golf club greeted me the other day by saying how perfect the weather was and that everything was great except for the Plague! I celebrated this year’s Thornbury Lobsterfest last night in my backyard with a small socially distanced group of friends. It was a beautiful clear night for admiring the stars from around our firepit. Earlier in the week we took in the Vincent Van Gogh immersive exhibit at 1 Yonge St in Toronto. Beautiful images and a gorgeous soundtrack surround you in a magical setting. I highly recommend that all Van Gogh lovers try to see this travelling show.
Here are some viewing recommendations for your week:

Streaming

Yellowstone (3 seasons, 30 episodes) Truly, the most beautifully cinematic Western series I have ever seen on TV.  Gorgeous musical score as well. Stars Kevin Costner and is directed by Taylor Sheridan and 6 others.
Rewind (Documentary, 1 h 26 m) Digging through the vast collection of his father’s home videos, a young man reconstructs the unthinkable story of his boyhood and exposes vile abuse passed through generations. This will make you think differently about sexual abuse cases and the impact that the abuse has on children.
Another Mother’s Son (1 h 43 m) Stars Jenny Seagrove and John Hannah.Based on the true story of Louisa Gould, the drama is set during WWII on the Nazi-occupied island of Jersey.  Lou took in an escaped Russian POW and hid him over the war’s course.  The tension mounts as it becomes clear that Churchill will not risk an assault to recapture the British soil, and the island-community spirit begins to fray under the pressures of hunger, occupation and divided loyalty.  Against this backdrop, Lou fights to preserve her family’s sense of humanity and to protect the Russian boy as if he was her own.  Moving and powerful.
Brave New World (9 episodes) TV adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s book set in dystopian future.  Stars Alden Ehrenreich, Jessica Brown Findlay, Harry Lloyd, Nina Sosanya, Joseph Morgan.  I will never get those 9 hours of my life back!  Very dark and very similar to Westworld in its menacing revolt of the clones undercurrents.  You have been warned about this first effort from the new NBC Peacock streaming service.
The Grizzlies (1 h 42 m)  The best Canadian film I have ever seen and its based on a true story!! In a small Arctic town struggling with the highest suicide rate in North America, a group of Inuit students’ lives are transformed when they are introduced to the sport of lacrosse. I have now watched this film 4 times including once with my Florida movie club and now with my Thornbury Mahjong ladies.  I can’t recommend it highly enough for its beautiful images of the north and for its inspiring tale of a sport that empowers and motivates a community. It will make you laugh and cry.  Great performances from a mostly non-professional cast.

Superchannel

Funny Face (1 h 43 m) An impromptu fashion shoot at a book store brings about a new fashion model discovery in the shop clerk.  Audrey Hepburn is at her most luminous and she is matched with Fred Astaire as her co-star.  This 1957 musical features the music of George and Ira Gershwin.  The fashion shoots were filmed by Richard Avedon and the film is absolutely gorgeous in vivid color featuring beautiful clothing and fabulous fashion montages.  Save this one for a rainy day and enjoy!

Apple TV Plus

Little Voice (9 episodes) A love letter to the diverse musicality of New York, it explores the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s. The music is all written by Sarah Bareilles.  Brittany O’Grady stars as the struggling singer-songwriter who tirelessly composes songs in a makeshift recording studio. Very endearing.

Netflix

Cursed (10 episodes) A teenage sorceress named Nimue encounters a young Arthur on her quest to find a powerful and ancient sword.  Stars Katherine Langford, Devon Terrell, Gustaf Skarsgard (yes, there is yet another Swedish Skarsgard brother who is also an actor).  If you long for mythic fantasy in a far away past, this is your escapism series.

Recommendations for other shows worth watching on Netflix:

HBO/Crave

Perry Mason (8 episodes)  In booming 1932 Los Angeles, a down-and-out defense attorney takes on the case of a lifetime. Stars Matthew Rhys, Tatiana Maslany, Lily Taylor.

I do feel that HBO has finally crossed way over the noir boundary and has created one of the darkest most nihilistic series I have ever seen on TV. Not your grandparents’ Perry Mason. In the most recent episode, Perry finally became a lawyer!!

PBS

Grantchester (5 seasons, 31 episodes) A Cambridgeshire clergyman finds himself investigating a series of mysterious wrongdoing in his small village of Grantchester.  A dishy vicar with a knack for solving crimes!!  Why are the idyllic villages of England so crime ridden?

Comic Relief

Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee and tonight, John Oliver have all returned to work, thank goodness. Something to lighten the daily grind of Covid-19 doomsaying, Black Lives Matter/defund police rhetoric, destruction of monuments video coverage, etc.  I find their attempts to comment comically (and now without an actual live audience) on daily events to be fascinating. Still tuning in on YouTube for James Corden’s, Seth Meyer’s and Conan O’Brian’s commentary.

Closing Words

The week to come will feature some golf and some time with friends. Can’t wait until our boys come next weekend for the August Long Weekend.  In the meantime, have a wonderful week wherever you are! Try to stay cool and be kind to one another.

And now for some videos you might like to share:

Back in TO for a few days…

I’m sitting in our condo enjoying the AC and our view from the 23rd floor of Lake Ontario.  We came in for a few days of seeing friends, golfing at our club here and appointments (most importantly with my hairdresser of almost 40 years and I am blonde again!).  We are also going to take in the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibition downtown which has had great reviews. Here are some viewing recommendations for you:

Streaming

Palm Springs (1 h 31 m) When carefree Nyles and reluctant maid of honour Sarah have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated as they are unable to escape the venue, themselves or each other in a Groundhog Day type of scenario. Stars Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons, Peter Gallagher. Very whimsical if you are comfortable with the highly conceptual time in an endlessly repeating  time loop kind of setting.
First Cow (2 h 2 m) A skilled cook has travelled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant who is also seeking his fortune.  Soon the two collaborate on a successful business. A very touching meditation on friendship. Stars John Magaro and Orion Lee.
Ramy (2 seasons, 21 episodes) In New Jersey, Ramy, son of Egyptian immigrants, begins a spiritual journey, divided between his Muslim community, God, and his friends who see endless possibilities. Stars Ramy Youssef, Hiam Abbass and (in season 2) Mahershala Ali. I loved this very thoughtful journey of a young man through the worlds of work, family, sex, friendship and spirituality. Ramy’s aimlessness and questionable decisions have a “car crash” aspect to them.  Each episode is very different and has a depth far beyond the typical sitcom.  It is a truly original show with great characters and surprising twists and turns. I loved it. Can’t wait for Season 3.
The Salisbury Poisonings (3 episodes) A true life drama about the Novichok nerve agent poisoning crisis in Salisbury, England in 2018.  Somewhat reminiscent of Chernobyl in its examination of a potential disaster. Stars Rafe Spall, Anne-Marie Duff, Darren Boyd, Mark Addy. I found this to be a powerful examination of a situation that could have been a widespread public health disaster had it not been so thoroughly investigated. I was riveted.
Yellowstone (3 seasons, 30 episodes) Truly, the most beautifully cinematic Western series I have ever seen on TV.  Gorgeous musical score as well. Stars Kevin Costner and is directed by Taylor Sheridan and 6 others.
Dirty John (Season 2, 8 episodes) The true story of Betty Broderick, who shot and killed her ex-husband and his new wife after being driven to the point of madness.  He left her after she supported him through college degrees in Law and Medicine. Incredibly sad true story of a woman driven to the point of madness by a gaslighting cad of a husband.

Crave/HBO

Perry Mason (8 episodes)  In booming 1932 Los Angeles, a down-and-out defense attorney takes on the case of a lifetime. Stars Matthew Rhys, Tatiana Maslany, Lily Taylor.
I do feel that HBO has finally crossed way over the noir boundary and has created one of the darkest most nihilistic series I have ever seen on TV. Not your grandparents’ Perry Mason.

Amazon Prime

Informer (6 episodes) A young East London man is coerced by a counter terrorism officer to work undercover for him.  Stars Paddy Considine, Nathan Rizwan, Bel Powley.  A powerful look at a very marginalized Muslim community in London, modern day policing, and of course, the pursuit of potential terrorists.  I was throughly engrossed in this drama and thought that the star Nathan Rizwan was terrific as the central character.

Moment of Zen

Just watching CBS Sunday Morning and admiring their examination of the life of John Lewis.  His long career as a civil rights activist (when civil disobedience didn’t necessarily include rioting in the streets) is a wonder to behold.  Looking forward to the comic commentary of Jim Gaffigan, surely one of the most wholesome comics on today’s scene. Other segments include a virtual choir with 17,572 singers; Louis Gossett Jr; hard currency as one Washington city prints its own money on wood; portraits of medical heroes; the art of Kim Novak; and finally, a trip to the Everglades in Florida.

Closing Words

Looking forward to a mixed week of golfing and renewing friendships in Toronto. This week, our Thornbury Mahjong group is going to vary our lunchtime socially distanced gathering to include a discussion of one of my favourite Canadian films, The Grizzlies.  Now available on the free CBC Gem app, this terrific film tells the true story of a small Arctic town struggling with the highest suicide rate in North America and how a group of Inuit students’ lives are transformed when they are introduced to the sport of lacrosse.  I showed this film to my Naples Movie Club and they were moved to laughter and tears. Watch it if you can! Also available to stream through iTunes.  Have a wonderful week wherever you are.  Leaving you with a forwarded email that actually made me laugh until I cried:

Summer storm edition…

We’ve been having a great weekend with our children celebrating my husband’s birthday. However, the weather this past week has been frightful!  Lots of thunderstorms, which, barring power outages, has made for some justifiable screen viewing time! Here are some suggestions for you:

Amazon

7500 (1 h 33 m) When terrorists try to seize control of a Berlin-Paris flight, a soft-spoken young American co-pilot struggles to save the lives of the passengers and crew while forging a surprising connection with one of the hijackers. Stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  I loved this suspenseful film in which you willingly overcome your sense of disbelief as almost the entire action of the film takes place in the cockpit, and you feel as though you are along for the ride. I also loved the fact that the story is so economically told in an hour and a half, rather than having to commit to several episodes.

Apple TV Plus

Greyhound (1 h 31 m) Early in WWII, an inexperienced US Navy captain must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by a Nazi U-boat Wolfpack.  Tom Hanks delivers another very sympathetic performance as the captain of a naval destroyer. I loved this terrific suspense film, again told in an hour and a half.  Hanks wrote, produced and starred in this one.

Netflix

Unsolved Mysteries (10 episodes) Immersive, character-driven stories are rooted in the experiences of ordinary people who have lived the unthinkable. Families, detectives and journalists hope viewers hold the clues to solving these mysteries. Great little mysteries all told in under one hour each.
Homemade (17 episodes) Confined at home as a consequence of the COVID-19 outbreak, filmmakers created personal, moving stories that capture our shared experience of life in quarantine. Each film is under 10 minutes long, so you could easily watch them all in under one sitting.
The Woods (6 episodes, in Polish with English subtitles) From the Harlan Coben crime thriller.  Paul Copeland is looking to solve the murder of his sister back in 1994.  Still plowing through it and I’m only 4 episodes in, but it’s dark and intriguing and I will stay with it.
Warrior Nun (10 episodes) After waking up in a morgue, an orphaned teen discovers she now possesses superpowers as the chosen Halo Bearer for a secret sect of demon-hunting nuns.  Bat shit crazy show oriented to a young audience but I’m now up to the last episode!!
The Old Guard (2 h 5 m) a covert team of immortal mercenaries are suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.  Stars Charlize Theron and Matthias Schoenaerts.  Bat shit crazy again, but told in an economical 2 hours.  Stay tuned after the credits as they seem to foretell a sequel.  We shall see if Theron’s popularity can command an audience for a sequel.

HBO/Crave

Tracker (5 episodes from South Africa) Action series featuring various stories of organized crime, diamond smuggling, Black Rhinos, the CIA and terrorism in CapeTown South Africa.  So unusual for US tv.  From the Cinemax network, known for action series.
Perry Mason (8 episodes)  In booming 1932 Los Angeles, a down-and-out defense attorney takes on the case of a lifetime. Stars Matthew Rhys, Tatiana Maslany and Juliet Rylance.

Streaming

Hamilton (2 h 40 m) The real life of one of America’s foremost founding fairs and first secretary if the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. Capture live on Broadway from the Richard Rogers Theatre with the original Broadway cast. As this is now available on video, I highly recommend watching it with the closed captions as the words can be so difficult to catch.  It will increase your enjoyment of the very clever libretto!

The Outpost (2 h 3 m) A small team of US soldiers battle against hundreds of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. Stars Orlando Bloom, Scott Eastwood and Caleb Landry Jones. Based on a true story, I have to admit that I only lasted 10 minutes into this one before the relentless explosions drove me out of the room. My husband and son did watch the entire thing and found it very powerful.

Irresistible (1 h 42 m) A Democratic strategist helps a retired veteran run for mayor in a small, conservative Midwest town. Stars Steve Carell, Rose Byrne, Chris Cooper.  I have to confess that I found this film a little annoying in its heavy handed unfunniness, but stay tuned for the many twist endings.  Jon Stewart directed this and needs to do some more studying of the masters of screen comedy.
Field of Blood (4 episodes) Glasgow 1982, a young girl investigates mysterious murders in a world of men.  I confess that I have been looking at the offerings of Acorn and BritBox and then getting my son to find them for me.  This one is a bit slow and lugubrious.  Only for those with a strong addiction to British crime series.
Lady and the Tramp (1 h 43 m) Live action remake of the classic romantic tale of a sheltered uptown Cocker spaniel dog and a streetwise downtown Mutt. voices provided by Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux, Sam Elliott, Ashley Jensen, Janelle Monae. I found this a little longer than I would have liked, but your small children may love it.
Dummy (10 episodes, from Quibi, each under 10 minutes) An aspiring writer befriends her boyfriend’s sex doll and the two take on the world together. Stars Anna Kendrick and Donal Logue. I loved this strangely original show and found it hysterically funny. Perhaps not for everyone.

Bonus List of Popular Favourites

Friends often ask me to recommend the best things to watch on Network TV, Netflix, Amazon, etc. and I often respond with the exasperated question: for God’s sake, why don’t you read my blog as that is the entire purpose of it?  However, I realize that for many people, there is just so much content available that they simply want some suggestions as to where to start.
Well, as a matter of fact, during this pandemic, my Florida Community Electronic Bulletin Board (Neighbour Next Door) has been requesting recommendations for favourite TV shows, movies and documentaries available on Netflix, Amazon, You Tube, etc. These served as a great reminder to me of many programs I have written about before that people are newly discovering every day! By the way, I resisted commenting as to whether I liked them as there are some that I really wouldn’t recommend, but to each his or her own as far as taste is concerned. Here they are so far:

Closing Words

Enjoy the week to come! I will be playing some golf, having a socially distanced dinner with friends, enjoying a socially distanced lunch with my Mahjong group, etc. Looking forward to next weekend when we will have a belated socially distanced celebration of our anniversary in Toronto with longtime friends with whom we have been celebrating our anniversary for 47 years.

I’m leaving you with a couple of delightful videos.

Here’s a very clever Hamilton parody about the importance of wearing a mask during the Pandemic:

Here’s the latest from Randy Rainbow:

Holiday edition…

We’ve had a lovely holiday weekend with family, dining alfresco, playing Movie Trivia, enjoying s’mores and my great nephew’s wonderful guitar playing around the campfire.  Now the laundry begins! My son Jonathan is staying on for a few days and I am looking forward to an evening of Sunday must-see TV tonight as well as achieving a consensual agreement amongst the three of us on our evening’s movie choice. Here are some viewing suggestions for you:

HBO/Crave

Trackers (5 episodes from South Africa) Action series featuring various stories of organized crime, diamond smuggling, Black Rhinos, the CIA and terrorism in CapeTown South Africa.  So unusual for US tv.  From the Cinemax network, known for action series.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels(10 episodes) When a grisly murder shocks Los Angeles in 1938, Detective Tiago Vega and his partner Lewis Michener become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of the city. Natalie Dormer, Rory Kinnear and Nathan Lane star.

Perry Mason (8 episodes)  In booming 1932 Los Angeles, a down-and-out defense attorney takes on the case of a lifetime. Stars Matthew Rhys, Tatiana Maslany and Juliet Rylance.

Streaming

Yellowstone (Season 3, 10 episodes) A ranching family in Montana faces off against others encroaching on their land.  Stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser.  A ranching family in Montana faces off against others encroaching on their land.  Basically a reboot of Bonanza for the current generation with spectacular production values and cinematography and a gorgeous sound track of Western themes. Just watch it for the beautiful photography and music!
The High Note (1 h 53 m) A superstar singer and her overworked personal assistant are presented with a choice that could alter the course of their respective careers. Stars Dakota Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Bill Pullman, Zoe Chao. I found this movie to be a little artificial and cliched, but it is a perfectly respectable romantic comedy set within the milieu of the music business.  If you’re longing for something that tries to be gently entertaining, this is your movie.
Dirty John Season 2 (8 episodes) The true story of Betty Broderick, who shot and killed her ex-husband and his new wife after being driven to the point of madness.  He left her after she supported him through college degrees in Law and Medicine.

Netflix

Deadwind (Season 2, 8 episodes) There are tons of murders happening in Helsinki!! Someone is on a trail of vengeance (or are they?).  Great family relationships and partner relationships between the detectives.
The Woods (6 episodes, in Polish with English subtitles) From the Harlan Coben crime thriller.  Paul Copeland is looking to solve the murder of his sister back in 1994.  I’m only two episodes in, but it’s dark and intriguing and I will stay with it.

HGTV

House Hunters: Comedians on Couches Dan Levy, John Mulaney, Whitney Cummings, J.B. Smoove and more turn their comic gaze and rapier wit to one of HGTV’s most popular and popularly satirized shows, House Hunters. I love this show where popular comedians deliver unexpurgated, no-holds-barred color commentary on classic episodes of the phenomenally long-running series.  A bit mean-spirited, but hilarious.

Comic Relief

Props to the comedians performing from their homes and backyards including Bill Maher, Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, Colbert, Noah, etc.

Moment of Zen

CBS Sunday Morning has been on at 9 a.m. every Sunday morning on CBS for almost 50 years. I love this inspiring and informative program which always ends with a calming moment of nature.  Do yourself a favour, and start your Sunday viewing with this lovely show.
