Life with Jonathan…

It’s been a great visit with our son Jon! We have hiked the Marsh Trail in the Everglades, dined out on Fifth Ave. at Delmar, toured the Hurricane devastation in Bonita Beach, Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel/Captiva. We had a shopping spree at the Miromar Outlets, shopped the Coastland Centre and dined at the Cheesecake Factory, hit the Saturday morning market on 3rd St. and dined at Jane’s, dined with friends and lounged around our pool. Still to come: a cruise around the Everglades and much more dining out!! In the meantime, here are some viewing suggestions for you:

ABC

Will Trent (7 episodes) Special Agent Will Trent was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. Determined to make sure no one feels as he did, he now has the highet clearance rate. Stars Ramon Rodriguez, Erika Christensen, Sonja Sohn. I love this police series! PS, he’s dyslexic!!

Abbott Elementary (Season 2, 22 episodes) Delightful mockumentary about a Philadelphia elementary school. Love this series!!!

AMC

That Dirty Black Bag (8 episodes) Ultra violent Westrn where two men face off in a savage wild west. Stars Brits Douglas Booth and Dominic Cooper, Israeli actress Niv Sultan, etc. Weirdly wonderful in a very unique way.

Apple

The Reluctant Traveller (8 episodes) follows the adventures of Eugene Levy as he sits some of the world’s most remarkable hotels, as well as explores the people, places and cultures.

Shrinking (10 episodes) A grieving therapist starts to tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge changes to people’s lives – including his own. Stars Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Michael Urie. Delightful, although a little weird seeing Harrison Ford do comedy in his trademark grumpy style.

Hello Tomorrow (10 episodes) Follows a group of traveling salesmen hawking lunar timeshares. Crazy look into the future in a world that seems mired in the ’50’s. Stars Billy Crudup, Alison Pill, Hank Azaria. I honestly don’t know what to make of this very odd show but I stuck with the first 3 episodes that were released and have stayed on to watch further episodes despite its weirdness.

Dear Edward (10 episodes) a 12-year-old boy becomes the lone survivor of a plane crash. As he and others affected by the tragedy try to make sense of wht happened, unexpected friendships, romances, and communities are formed. Great cast includes Taylor Schilling, Connie Britton, and many others. From the producer Jason Katims (Friday Night LightsThis is Us), this might be a little soapy and maudlin for some as it pulls at the heartstrings. Get out your hankies!!

Disney

Europe from Above (Documentary, 25 episodes) Produced by National Geographic. Using the very latest in drone and aerial photographic technology we tour across countries and their seasons, gettig a unique view from above. Hypnotic!!

Fox

Accused (15 episodes) Chronicles ordiary people getting cuaght up in extraordinary situations where one wrong turn leads to another, until it’s too late to turn back. An interesting spin on a crime anthology series.

HBO/HBO Max

Real Time with Bill Maher – (625 episodes) Comedian and political satirist Bill Maher discusses topical events with guests from various backgrounds. Acerbic to the max!!

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (321 episodes) Former Daily Show host and correspondent John Oliver brings his witty persona to this weekly news satire program. Love this Brit! He brings a very fresh and funny perspective to today’s issues.

The Last of Us (9 episodes) Joel and Ellie, a pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across post-pandemic America. Stars Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Anna Torv. Incredibly suspenseful and moving.

CB Strike (Season 4, 4 episodes) War veteran turned private detective Cormoran Strike solves brutal murders with the help of his trusted partner Robin Ellacott. This series is adapted from the crime novels of Robert Galbraith (pseudonym of J. K. Rowling). Fabulous series!! Great chemistry between the leads played by Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger.

NBC

Jeopardy –  is back Mon – Fri, Ken Jennings is the permanent regular host, all is well with the world!!! New champions keep emerging every couple of days!!! Mayim Bialik has been hosting a special high-school reunion tournament. Great contestants, but her distractingly frumpy wardrobe, hair and makeup and her slightly delayed approval of responses is very off-putting. Ken Jennings should never be allowed to take vacation days.

Netflix

Red Rose (8 episodes) A group of teenage friends are infiltrated by the Red Rose app, which flourishes on their smartphones and threatens them with dangerous consequences if they don’t comply with its demands. This show is for teenagers! One episode was quite enough for me.

Peacock

The Ark (5 episodes) Follows the remaining crew of a spacecraft known as Ark One, who must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course and survive after experiencing a catastrophic event that caused massive destruction and loss of life. I love science fiction. There is a bit of a deja vu feeling with this fairly unoriginal storyline. It has a weirdly Serbian vibe and was filmed mostly in Belgrade, Serbia. I totally enjoyed it!!

Poker Face (10 episodes) Charlie has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but investigate and solve. Stars Natasha Lyonne, Benjamin Bratt. Fabulous!! A new Columbo!!! I loved this series and can’t wait for all the episodes to be released.

Streaming

Knock at the Cabin (1 h 40 m) While vacationing, a girl and her parents are taken hostage by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse. Stars Dave Bautista (who is surprisingly good) Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Rupert Grint. From director M. Night Shyamalan. Hey this time, for once, we’re pre-apocalyptic. I enjoyed this very weird film.

Party Down (revival with 6 episodes filmed for a total of 26 over three seasons) Ten years after the last season was filmed, Kyle Bradway has just landed his star-making superhero role; a former cater waiter, he hires “Party Dow” to cater his celebration party leading to welcome reunions and some unexpected surprises. Stars Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Jane Lynch, Jenifer Garner, Martin Starr, Megan Mullally, Ryan Hansen. If you loved the original series, you’ll enjoy this reboot.

M3GAN (1 h 42 m) A robotics engineer at a ty company builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own. I unexpectedly loved this little film which I was forced against my will to watch by my son. Suspenseful and funny!

Closing Words

Have a wonderful week wherever you are. The Oscars (Mar. 12) are fast approaching so try and see as many nominated films as you can if you plan to watch the awards. Last night’s Screen Actors Guild awards were streamed on YouTube and they were a great prep for the Academy Awards. Lots of film clips and great acceptance speeches. Only acting awards, so the show races along (and also runs commercial free). This week at my Movie Club, I am showing Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (nominated for Costume Design) and next week’s film is Women Talking (nominated for Best Film and some acting nominations as well).

The Globe and Mail ran a great article this past week on the TV shows you may be missing (I totally concur that they are worth watching):

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/article-five-shows-watch-winter-2023/

PS I apologize in advance if there are more typos than usual. I am a day delayed in writing this (too many excursions yesterday with my son) and my usual proofreader had an early teatime this morning, so forgive me.

Oh my, our season is swiftly proceeding…

I can’t believe how quickly the time here is passing. Our younger son Jonathan is joining us for two weeks of holidays this week and I can’t wait to see him. I don’t think he wants to do touristy things, but he’ll be keen to dine out. Our usual activities like golf, fitness and bocce are keeping us pretty busy but I’m sure he’ll be happy to kick back and lounge by the pool when we are in our programs. In the meantime, here are some viewing suggestions for you:

Sharper (1 h 56 m) I loved this fast-paced thriller. Motivations are suspect, and expectations are turned upside down as a con artist takes on manhattan billionaires. Stars Julianne Moore, John Lithgow and Sebastian Stan. Just under 2 hours, this is so preferable to the more common multi-episode format that is the norm today. It kept me on the edge of my seat.

Dear Edward (10 episodes) a 12-year-old boy becomes the lone survivor of a plane crash. As he and others affected by the tragedy try to make sense of wht happened, unexpected friendships, romances, and communities are formed. Comedy Central

South Park (322 episodes) I confess, I don’t usually watch this show, but on Megan Kelly’s recommendation, I caught the recent episode starring Harry and Megan and actually laughed out loud. It is irreverent and vulgar to the max, but you have to admire their spot-on skewering of this publicity loving couple who yearn for privacy yet can’t stay out of the spotlight.

Disney

Fire of Love (Documentary, 1 h 38 m) Intrepid scientists and lovers Katia and Maurice Krafft died in a volcanic explosion doing the very thing that brought them together: unraveling the mysteries of volcanoes by capturing the most explosive imagery ever recorded. Produced by National Geographic and features incredible photography.

Europe from Above (Documentary, 25 episodes) Produced by National Geographic. Using the very latest in drone and aerial photographic technology we tour across countries and their seasons, gettig a unique view from above. Hypnotic!!

Netflix

Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake (Documentary, 3 episodes) Survivors’ firsthand accounts and actual footage fuel this emotional docuseries about the deadly 2015 earthquake that shook Nepal. So skillfully made and so absorbing. Incredible footage of the events. I couldn’t look away.

Earthstorm (Documentary, 4 episodes) Storm cheers, survivors and first responders recount their harrowing experiences with volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. Mesmerizing!

Full Swing (Documentary 8 episodes) follows behind the scenes of what it takes to compete and win at the highest levels in men’s professional golf, following the PGA players through their wins and losses. Full confession: I am not a fan of watching sports on TV. However, this one had me hooked as it really gives you a sense of the lives of the top players. Totally enjoyable.

PBS

Vienna Blood (Season 3, 3 episodes) With the discovery of a young seamstress murdered in a luxury Viennese fashion house, Max and Oskar sense that the glamour industry conceals dark and sinister truths. Quite frankly, I record this series and put it on for a good snooze. So stilted and Viennese!

Miss Scarlet & the Duke (Season 3, 6 episodes) The mysteries continue as Eliza Scarlet joins forces with a Scotland Park inspector to solve crime in 19th C. London.

All Creatures Great and Small (Season 3, 7 Episodes) It’s spring 1939 as the period drama returns for a 3rd series. Tristan is a qualified vet and James enters a new stage of his life with Helen. However, with war looming, all have to consider their purpose in Darrowby and Beyond. So comforting!!!

A Spy Among Friends (From ITV in the UK, 6 episodes) Based on the NYTimes best-selling book written by Ben Macintyre about the search for the fourth man in the Cambridge spy circle set in the 1960’s. Damian Lewis, Guy Pearce and Anna Maxwell Martin star. Gritty and very LeCarre, probably not for the easily bored. I admit that I probably snoozed through a fair bit of this one.

Closing Words

Have a wonderful week wherever you are! Cheering words to good friends who are dealing with health problems and a reminder to always look on the bright side of life. I haven’t seen much of Randy Rainbow lately, but YouTube has his latest video, so I hope you enjoy it:

Pamela (Documentary 1 h 52 m) About Pamela Amderson, who I never cared about until I watched this terrific film. You will root for this terribly damaged survivor!

Cunk on Earth (Mockumentary, 5 episodes) Follows Philomena Cunk as she comically tells the story of our greatest inventions and asks experts hard-hitting questions about humanity’s progress. So idiotically silly!!

Viking Wolf (from Norway, 1 h 37 m) Thale (17) has just moved with her parents to a small town after her mother has a new job in the local police. After a student is killed brutally at a party Thale attends, she becfomes a key witness. Was the killer an animal? A wolf? Gorgeous Norwegian scenery. Kind of a plodder, since there isn’t one original element here.

Infiesto (from Spain, 1 h 36 m) A girl missng for months reappears, barefoot and terrified, in a small town in Asturias, launching an investigation that will reveal horrifying truths. Why do people in movies about murderous cults never seem to know anything about cults?

Spoiler Alert (1 h 52 m) The story of Michael Ausiello and Kit Cowan’s relationship, which takes a tragic turn when Cowan is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Get out your hankies! In the vein of Brian’s Song, so touching. Great performanes from Ji Parsos, Ben Aldridge and Sally Field.

The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes (Documentary, 3 episodes) A few weeks before the opening of the Eichmann trial, transcripts of recorded conversations that Adolf Eichmann had had with a Dutch Nazi journalist were mysteriously handed over to prosecutor Gideon Hausner. A fascinating true tale of how the tapes and transcripts were used to convict Eichmann, despite his assertions that he was only following orders.

Streaming

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2 h 41 m, but seems much longer) OK, Angela Bassett got nominated, so I had to see this. A total waste of my time as the endless special effects battle scenes got so repetitious. I am not a Marvel fan, so this was definitely not my cup of tea.

Closing Words

To my friends in the north, stay warm. I couldn’t believe the weather reports of bitter cold. To my friends in the south, wear sunscreen! I am playing in a golf tournament this week, so here is a golf funny for you to enjoy:
